ご挨拶

Greeting from dean of Life Science Network (LSN)

生命科学は今や、多岐の学問領域にまたがる分野として認知されている。様々な専門家が集結して、一つの課題にじっくりと取り組む体制を組むことが、この分野の発展には必須であり、国内のみならず、国際的な共創も柔軟に行える体制を作ることが求められている。そういう機運の中で東京大学生命科学ネットワークは１６の部局が参加して運営され、新たな研究と教育の潮流を作り支えるべく発展してきた。特に毎年行われている生命科学シンポジウムは単なる研究成果の発表の場ではなく、各部局の専門性を超えた学生・研究者の活発な交流の場として、充実した議論と連携の機会を提供している。

生命科学は文字通り生命を科学する学問分野であるゆえ、我々の生活、社会のあらゆる局面と密接に関わっている。生命科学ネットワークでは、大学の生命科学教科書の刊行・改訂に取り組んでおり、一般向けの生命科学を広く学ぶための教科書、理系の学生向けのやや専門性の高い教科書、さらには物理・化学・数理系から境界領域、最先端領域としての生命科学を学ぶ教科書他、生命科学にそれぞれの人が自身の必要性に応じたレベルで学ぶことができるシリーズを刊行している。これらの教科書は実際の東京大学の講義に使われているだけではなく実に１００を超える大学で使われている。毎年開催されている生命科学シンポジウムでは、先端の生命科学をわかりやすく伝えるために、総合文化研究科・教養学部が毎週行っている「高校生と大学生のための金曜特別講座」と共同でオンラインで講演の配信も行っている。このような活動を通し、生命科学ネットワークは、生命科学の教育・研究が専門性の統合、再編を経て最先端の生命科学分野を開拓していけるよう、今後も活動を続けていく所存である。

Life sciences are now recognized as a field encompassing a wide range of disciplines. For the development of this field, it is essential to establish a system that allows experts from various fields to come together and carefully address a single important issue and to establish a flexible system that can collaborate internationally. Under these circumstances, the University of Tokyo Life Sciences Network, which is operated with the participation of 16 faculties, has developed to establish and support new trends in research and education. In particular, the annual Life Sciences Symposium is not just a forum for presenting research results but also a forum for fruitful discussion and collaboration between students and researchers beyond the specialties of each faculty.

Life sciences are academic disciplines dealing with life and are closely related to all aspects of our lives and society. The Life Sciences Network publishes and revises university life science textbooks, including textbooks for the study of life sciences broadly for the general public, slightly specialized textbooks for students, textbooks for the study of life sciences as the boundary between physics, chemistry, and mathematics or as a cutting-edge field, and textbooks for the study of life sciences in various fields. The series of textbooks is published so that students can learn at a level appropriate to their needs. These textbooks are used at more than 100 universities as well as lectures at the University of Tokyo. The university holds the annual Life Science Symposium and distributes lectures online with the weekly Friday Lectures for High School Students and College Students at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Through these activities, the Life Science Network will continue to work to ensure that life science education and research can continue to develop cutting-edge life science fields through the integration and reorganization of expertise.
